Allow the first 10-20 users to use the product for free on the terms that they will give your apps reviews, This is like a sort of testing. These reviews can allow you to improve the product and you can also gage usefulness of the app and how much the 20 users would have been willing to pay for the app. If other people can see these reviews then they know from others like themselves what to expect for the price

Russ,

We tried starting FREE and then charging money with Flutter, the first MMS application for the iPhone. By charging nothing for the app upfront, you lose all revenue from early adopters. When you start charging, you actually *lower* demand for your application. Also, the increased demand increases the number of negative reviews you might receive if your app isn't perfect at launch.

It's more useful to charge the early adopters, but limit demand, use their review feedback to improve the product, and then increase demand by lowering the price.

Keep the buzz going for as long as you can, the iTunes store will only promote your app initially...after that, the marketing is all based on the quality of your product and the other things you do outside the App Store.

How about starting out free, in order to gain some momentum, and then changing to paid. Is that even possible?
